What browser settings must I change for Radio@AOL?

You need to have cookies enabled within your Web browser in order for Radio@AOL to play properly. Follow the instructions below to enable cookies in your Web browser.

Allowing cookies will enable Radio@AOL to store your preferences, including your volume settings.

Note: You may need to make additional adjustments if you have set higher security settings for the Internet zone in your browser - see below for details.

To enable cookies in your Web browser (Internet Explorer 6.0):

  1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Privacy tab, and then click Advanced.
  3. Tick Override automatic cookie handling. Here you can specify how you want Internet Explorer to handle first-party cookies (which come directly from Web sites you are viewing) and third-party cookies (which come from Web sites other than ones you are viewing)
  4. Choose either the Accept or Prompt options as follows:
    • To specify that you want Internet Explorer to always allow cookies to be saved on your computer (without asking), click Accept.
    • To specify that you want Internet Explorer to ask every time whether or not you want to allow a cookie to be saved on your computer, click Prompt.
    • (Optional) If you want Internet Explorer to always allow session cookies (cookies that will be deleted from your computer when you close Internet Explorer) to be saved on your computer, click Always allow session cookies.
  5. When you have made your choice, click OK.

To enable cookies in your Web browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5):

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Security tab.
  2. Click the Internet zone, then click Custom Level.
  3. Under Cookies, make the following selections:
    • Allow cookies that are stored on your computer -- Enable
    • Allow Per-session Cookies (not stored) -- Enable
  4. Click OK, then click OK again.

Note: If you have previously changed your Internet Explorer security settings and selected 'High' security level for the Internet zone, you may need to make additional adjustments as follows:

  1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click Custom Level.
  4. Make the following setting changes:
    • ActiveX controls and plug-ins:
      • Download signed ActiveX controls -- Enable
      • Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins -- Enable
      • Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting -- Enable
    • Downloads:
      • File Download -- Enable
    • Miscellaneous:
      • Software Channel Permissions -- Medium
    • Scripting:
      • Active Scripting -- Enable
      • Allow paste operations via script -- Enable
      • Scripting of Java Applets -- Enable
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click the Advanced tab.
  7. Locate the Browsing category.
  8. Tick the following option: Disable script debugging
  9. Un-tick the following options:
    • Display a notification about every script error
    • Reuse windows for launching shortcuts
  10. Click Apply.

Then change your Temporary Internet Files Settings and clear your browser cache as follows:

  1. Click the General tab, then under Temporary Internet Files click Settings.
  2. Select Every visit to the page.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click Delete Files under the Temporary Internet Files section.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click the Refresh icon on the AOL navigation bar, then select a station to hear music.

These hints will help you get the most out of Radio@AOL:

Exploring Radio Stations

To find your favourite music stations, look in the left column of your radio player, under the words 'Stations by Category'. There you'll see a list of different music categories.

To view all of the stations within each category, click the + sign to the left of the category name.
Once you find a station you want to listen to, double-click on it and the music will start within a few seconds.
With over 100 Radio@AOL stations to choose from, be sure to explore all the music your player has to offer!

Getting Help with Radio@AOL

Remember, all you need to do is click once on the Help button in the upper right corner of your radio anytime you need more information. Here you'll find help on everything from audio problems to general radio information.

Adjusting the Volume

Next to the Play button in the lower left corner of your radio are Stop and Mute buttons, along with a sliding volume control.

Click Stop to stop playing the music and click Mute to silence it. Click Mute once more to hear the music again.
To change your volume, point your mouse to the volume slider, then click and hold your mouse button down while moving the slider to the right or left. This will increase or decrease the volume of your radio player.

Song Information Display

See the box under 'Now Playing'. This area displays the artist, song and album names for the song currently playing, along with hyperlinks to AOL Music Search and corresponding album art.
Also notice the timer located at the bottom of this box. This indicates how much time is left in the current song.

See the upcoming two of five artists on the currently playing station.

What's Playing Now Tool Tip

No more switching stations to see what's playing on your favorite stations! Now you can see the currently playing artist and song on a station by simply hovering your mouse pointer over a station in the 'Stations by Category' list. Double-click on the station to begin playing.

AOL Recommends

If you're not sure what you want to hear or just want to try something new, check out the first entry in the 'Stations by Category' list called AOL Recommends. This category features three fantastic stations specially chosen by our expert DJs every week.

Related Station

If you already have a few favourite stations, here is a feature that will help you find even more of the music you love. Look inside the box immediately under 'Station Now Playing'. In addition to a short description of the station, this box also lists a related station. Each related station plays similar music to the one you have selected. To listen to a related station, simply click on the station name - it's that easy.

Rate This Song

Ever wish you could tell the DJ what you think of the songs being played on your favourite stations? Radio@AOL's Rate this Song feature lets you do just that. The Rate this Song button is located to the right above the artist, album and song names on your radio player. Click on it any time while a song is playing to send your rating directly to the AOL Radio DJs. From 'love it' to 'hate it' and everything in between, your feedback is an important factor in station programming.

Buy CD

Whenever you hear a favourite song on Radio@AOL, you're one click away from owning the CD. Simply click Buy CD just below the album art area on your radio player. Adding to your music collection has never been easier.

Download on iTunes

Whenever you hear a favourite song on AOL Radio, you're one click away from purchasing the track from the Apple iTunes Music Store. Simply click Download on iTunes right next to the 'Buy CD' area on your radio player. If you do not have iTunes installed, you will be prompted to download and install the iTunes software first.

How do I save my favourite Radio@AOL stations?
AOL Radio's My Presets feature enables you to save up to five of your favourite stations, which will appear at the top of Stations by Category each time you start the Radio@AOL player.

To save a station to the My Presets list:

  1. On the Radio@AOL player, click Radio Setup.
  2. Select a station name from the list of available stations, and then click Add.
  3. Repeat Step 2 to add as many as five stations to your list of favourites.
  4. When you have finished adding favourites, click Save. Your personalised My Presets list will appear at the top of the Stations by Category list.

Note: You can also add a station to your My Presets list by clicking Add to My Presets in the Station Now Playing section of the radio player. You must have a space available in your list to add a preset station in this manner.

Now you can access your preset stations from any computer. Plus, each AOL Screen Name can save its own list of My Preset stations.

To save a station to your AOL My Favourite Places list:

  1. On the Radio@AOL player, click on the 'heart' icon.
  2. Select Add to Favourites.
  3. Select Favourite Places. Your saved Radio@AOL station will now appear in My Favourite Places.

How do I know that I have access to Radio@AOL?
If you are an AOL Broadband Gold or Platinum member, you should be already be able to access Radio@AOL. To find out about becoming an AOL Broadband Gold or Platinum member, go to AOL Keyword: Broadband or visit http://www.aol.co.uk/products/broadband

Note: Selecting a broadband radio experience on a narrowband (dial-up) connection will likely result in song stutter and a poor listening experience. If you are on a dial-up connection, we recommend you listen to BBC Radio.

What happens when I share a station?
When you share a station with an online friend who is also using AOL, Radio@AOL will start and the station you have shared will begin playing on your friend's computer.

How do I download the required component for Radio@AOL?
This message will appear if you have deleted and/or are missing a required component to play stations on Radio@AOL. Please re-launch the application and when prompted, select Yes to download the required components for Radio@AOL.

What is the startup setting feature?
AOL Radio will ask you if you would like to have Radio@AOL start-up every time you sign on to AOL. If you select Yes, then the next time you sign on, Radio@AOL will start and begin playing the last station you were listening to.

To turn this feature off:

1. Click the Radio Setup button on the bottom left of the radio window.
2. Select the Startup Setting tab.
3. Un-tick Play Radio@AOL automatically when I sign on to AOL.
4. Click Save.

Note: Start up functionality is related to the use of the Radio@AOL application within the traditional AOL Client.

What are the minimum system requirements for Radio@AOL?
To enjoy Radio@AOL you must have the following hardware and software:
  • A computer with a sound card or integrated audio processor
  • Speakers or headphones
  • Windows 98/2000/ME/XP operating system
  • An AOL Broadband Gold or Platinum connection

How do I edit My Presets list?
You can add, remove, and reorder your list of preset stations at any time.

To edit the My Presets list:

  1. On the Radio@AOL player, click Radio Setup.
  2. To remove a previously saved station, select it in your My Presets list, and then click Remove.
  3. To change the order in which stations appear in your list of My Presets, select the station you wish to move and then click the Up or Down arrows until it appears where you want it in the list.
  4. To add a new station to your list, select a station name from the list of available stations, then click Add.
  5. When you have finished making changes, click Save.

How do I let my friend know about a Radio@AOL station I like?
If you are instant messaging while listening to Radio@AOL the name of the Radio@AOL station you are listening can be displayed at the bottom of the history display, above the toolbar on the IM window.

Your friend can click the radio indicator or the radio icon to directly access the AOL Radio station you are listening to.

Note: If you are typing, the typing indicator ["Screen Name is typing"] will display instead. However, the Radio indicator icon and link are always available, even when the typing indicator is displayed.

Your friend can also roll his/her mouse over your Screen Name in his/her Buddy List window to display the Buddy Quick View window. Your friend can click the radio indicator or the radio icon displayed in the middle of the window.

To turn off Radio@AOL sharing:

  1. Click Setup on the bottom of the Buddy List window.
  2. Click IM Settings and select the General IM tab.
  3. Un-tick Allow members to see what Radio@AOL station I am listening to during an IM conversation.
  4. Click Save. The name of the Radio@AOL station you are listening to (plus the the radio indicator and radio icon) will no longer display on your IM window.

How do I share a station with a friend?
Sharing a station with an online friend is easy:
  1. Select the station you'd like to share and begin playing.
  2. Click the Share Station button (it looks similar to the Buddy icon) in the title bar of the AOL Radio window. An Instant Message window opens.
  3. Type your friend's Screen Name in the Send To input box.
  4. If you want, type a personal message before or after the Station name that appears in the body of the Instant Message window.
  5. Click Send.

Note: The Buddy List feature displays the name of the Radio@AOL station that you are listening to. Your friend can click the radio indicator or the radio icon next to your Screen Name in the Buddy List to directly access the Radio@AOL station you are listening to.

Why can't I access Radio@AOL?

Radio@AOL is only available to AOL Broadband Gold and Platinum members.

A slower connection simply cannot keep up with the amount of data sent in the broadband radio stream. If you are on a dial-up connection, we recommend you listen to BBC Radio.

Why can't my friend share a station with me?
You can share most stations with an online friend who uses either Radio@AOL or Radio@Netscape. Simply click the share icon and follow the prompts to send the station through AOL Instant Messenger.

Note: While Radio@Netscape listeners can tune into a station you send them from Radio@AOL, they do not have the ability to send a station to you from the Radio@Netscape player.

Why is there no sound when I start Radio@AOL?
1. Are your speakers turned on?
2. Is the Mute button selected on the Radio@AOL player?
3. Are your PC's volume settings adjusted properly?

To change your PC's volume settings:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings, then click Control Panel.
    (Windows XP users, click Start, then Control Panel, then click Switch to classic view if visible)
  2. Double-click Sounds and Multimedia.
  3. Select the Audio tab.
  4. Under Sound Playback, click Volume.
  5. Make sure the Mute all box is un-ticked.
  6. Under the Wave heading, move the Volume slider to the top, and make sure the Mute box is un-ticked.
This should restore your audio, and you should then hear the music.

How do I improve Radio@AOL reception?
Audio cutting in and out and static are most often the result of poor connectivity. Streaming audio (which is the format Radio@AOL transmits) is especially susceptible to congestion related problems. We recommend you close some programs other than the AOL software to improve your streaming experience. Also try reducing unnecessary network activity (for example, file downloads or Web surfing) while listening to Radio@AOL.

Why does Radio@AOL stop when I start other programs?
Some sound cards allow playback of only one audio process at a time. If Radio@AOL is playing and you start another program that uses your sound card, Radio@AOL will stop playing. As soon as you quit the other program, Radio@AOL will resume playback.

Why do my friend and I not hear the same song?
I shared a station with an online friend, but we don't hear the same song playing on the station. What's going on?

It is possible that you and your buddy are listening to the same station, but may be at different points in the station play list. It is also possible that while you are using the UK broadband AOL Radio player, your buddy is on a different version of the AOL Radio player (for example, the American dial-up version) . In this case, you may not hear the same song playing at the same time.

Why are there pauses when switching stations?
When switching stations, a window will appear while Radio@AOL loads the station. The connection may take a few moments depending on your connection speed.

Radio@AOL hangs at Step 2
Radio@AOL hanging at step 2 is typically caused by firewall software that is not configured to allow Radio@AOL access to the Internet.

If you are getting a Firewall window when trying to start the Radio@AOL application, please allow or grant access to the following application: AOLMED~1.exe

Or, please contact the supplier of your firewall software for further assistance.

Additionally, ensure that the ActiveX controls are enabled in your Web browser by following these instructions:

Internet Explorer 5 and 6:

  1. Select Tools, then Internet Options from the menu at the top of the Internet Explorer window.
  2. Click the Security tab at the top of the Internet Options window.
  3. Select the Custom Level button. The Security Settings window will appear.
  4. Scroll down to the Download signed ActiveX controls entry and select Prompt.
  5. Scroll down to the Run ActiveX controls and plugins entry and select Enabled.
  6. Click the Apply button to save your changes.

Netscape 7 and above:

  1. Select Edit from your Netscape menu bar and choose Preferences.
  2. Click on the arrow next to Advanced to display the list of Advanced options.
  3. Select Scripts & Plugins.
  4. Select Navigator under the Enable JavaScript sub-heading.
  5. Click the OK button to save your changes.

Radio@AOL hangs at Step 3
If Radio@AOL hangs at Step 3, please try the following:
  1. Make sure you have any relevant updates to Microsoft Internet Explorer and/or the Microsoft XML Parser by choosing Windows Update from your Windows Start menu.
  2. Reinstall Radio@AOL by deleting the radio components from your hard drive (stored in a folder called radio@uk). Then return to AOL Keyword: Radio to re-download Radio@AOL.

Radio@AOL was not able to open due to the present set-up of this computer's pop-up blocking software
Try the following:
  1. Deactivate your pop-up blocking software.
  2. Add AOL.com to the 'white list' of domains accepted by your pop-up blocking software.
  3. Most pop-up blockers allow you to hold down Shift as you click, which disables pop-up blocking on a one-time basis.
Note: Consult the instructions for your pop-up blocking software, if you want to allow specific pop-ups to continue to run.

Radio@AOL doesn't appear and I have a pop-up blocker

Error: 'Sorry, you must run Windows Update first before proceeding to Radio@AOL'
Microsoft periodically releases software updates to the Windows operating system. Some of these updates can affect how Radio@AOL operates, and some of them will be required in order for Radio@AOL to operate at all. If this occurs to you, AOL will show a message asking you to run Windows Update. Once you have successfully completed Windows Update, Radio@AOL should operate as expected.

After running Windows Update, you may be asked to restart your computer for the new settings to take effect.

If you are experiencing problems using Radio@AOL and have already read the troubleshooting section on this page, you can also try the following:
  • Restart your PC and try accessing Radio@AOL again.
  • Reinstall Radio@AOL by deleting the radio components from your hard drive (stored in a folder called radio@uk). Then return to AOL Keyword: Radio to re-download Radio@AOL.
  • If you can sign on to AOL, go to AOL Keyword: Help for general AOL troubleshooting advice, or go to Live Help to chat to an AOL technical representative.
