What are download controls?

Downloading is the process of transferring a file stored on another computer to your computer. AOL has thousands of files to download. Files can include text documents, pictures, sounds, videos, and entire computer programs. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method of transferring files over the internet.

Download controls allow you to permit or deny the downloading of files from AOL software libraries and FTP sites.

WARNING: Before downloading files from an FTP site, you should be aware that some files can contain computer viruses or Trojan Horse programs that can damage your computer files, contain objectionable graphics, or compromise the security of your AOL account.

To use download controls:

  1. Go to or sign on to AOL and visit AOL Keyword: Parental Controls.
  2. Click on the screen name for whom you are setting the download controls.
  3. Click the More Options button at the top of the controls window and select Download Controls from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click in the appropriate boxes to block or allow software and FTP downloads.
  5. Click Save.

Note: To block the downloading of files attached to email, use Email Controls.
