What is identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone obtains and uses pieces of your identity to impersonate you.

Your unique identity is made up of several pieces of information such as your name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number, your mother's maiden name, etc. This information can be used for a variety of financial gains, such as creating a new credit card account, accessing funds from a bank account, or making purchases in your name.

As you can see, your identity is very valuable - and should be protected.
