How can I reduce the amount of spam I receive?

We would encourage you to report any unwanted email to us so that we can add the details to our automatic filters. In addition, we recommend you do the following:

  • Set up AOL's Email Controls to control who can and can't send you email. You can easily block email from a particular AOL screen name, internet email address or internet domain and even all internet users if you wish. You can also choose to ignore any emails containing pictures or attachments. To set up email controls, sign-on to AOL and go to AOL Keyword: Email Controls.
  • Guard your email address and do not unnecessarily give it out. Also ensure that you never give your password to anyone as a favourite tactic of spammers is to hijack an account and then use it to send out thousands of spam emails.
  • Create a special screen name (AOL gives you seven) to be used just for online public areas such as chat rooms where spammers often go to gather email addresses. Sign on to AOL and go to AOL Keyword: Screen Names to create additional screen names.
  • Never click on the Unsubscribe link in junk email you get as it generally does not work and may actually result in your getting even more spam.
