Resolving connectivity problems

If you are experiencing connectivity problems with the AOL software, it could be a result of certain spyware or adware on your computer. Some spyware and adware instances can actually prevent you from connecting to the internet. To prevent this from happening, please be sure to run AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 at least once a month (every 30 days) to receive the automatic updates. If you have automatic updates disabled, please ensure that you manually check for updates once a month.

To manually check for updates:

  1. Double-click the AOL Spyware Protection desktop icon. If there is no icon present, you can also launch AOL Spyware Protection by clicking the Start button, clicking Programs or All Programs, clicking the AOL folder, then clicking AOL Spyware Protection.
  2. On the AOL Spyware Protection main page, click the Settings link.
  3. Click the Check Now button.

Once you have updated the AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 software, run either a quick or full scan to eliminate any instances of spyware or adware on your computer.

To run a scan:

  1. Double-click the AOL Spyware Protection desktop icon. If there is no icon present, you can also launch AOL Spyware Protection by clicking the Start button, clicking Programs or All Programs, clicking the AOL folder, then clicking AOL Spyware Protection.
  2. To run a scan, click either the Run Quick Scan or Run Full Scan button.

    You will be taken to a different screen and your scan will begin. You will now see a progress bar. As long as the progress bar is still moving, the program is scanning your system. When the scan is complete, you will be taken to the results screen where you will be informed of how many files have been scanned and how many pieces of adware and spyware have been found.

    On the results screen, if AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 has detected spyware or adware, you will see each item displayed in the Items Found table, detailing the Name of the item, the Status (Tracking Cookie, Unknown Trojan, etc.), the Risk level, and the ability to Block, Ignore, or Allow each item.

    • Block - This blocks this instance and all future instances of this item.
    • Ignore - This does nothing. The item will be found again on future scans.
    • Allow - This allows this instance and all future instances of this item.
  1. Once you have selected the options for each of the found items, click the Apply Options button. AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 will now apply the options you've selected.
  2. Click the OK button.

Note: If AOL Spyware Protection 2.0 did not find any spyware or adware, click the OK button on the results screen to return to the main screen.
