To allow CompuServe 4.0.2 to connect on Windows XP, you will need to run through the following process:
Alternatively, if once in the 'Control Panel', you see on the top left-hand side 'Switch to Classic View' by clicking this, on the right-hand side, you will now see in the list 'Network Connections' By clicking this, it will take you to the page that shows on the left-hand side 'Network Tasks', select 'Create a new connection'
Tab 'General'
'Use dialing rules' is not ticked
'Show icon in notification area when connected' is ticked
Tab 'Options'
Skip this tab
Tab 'Security'
The security options must be set to 'Advanced'
Click the 'Settings'- button
The page that has now appeared in front of you is the "Advanced Security Settings".
Data encryption must be set to 'Optional encryption connect even if no encryption'
Below this setting it lists "Allow these protocols". The ones that should be selected, are: 'Unencrypted Password (PAP)' and 'Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP)'
After clicking 'OK' at the bottom of this page, you will see the follow message: "The Protocols you have selected include PAP SPAP and/or CHAP if one of these is negotiated, data encryption will not occur, do you want to keep these settings?" Click 'Yes', this will take you back to the 'Security'- tab
Under 'Interactive log in & scripting' make sure that the 'show terminal window' and 'run script' boxes are both ticked
By ticking 'run script' this will allow you to browse for the CIS script (located in C:\WINNT\System32\ras\cis.scp)
Tab 'Networking'
Under 'Type of dial up server I am calling', select 'PPP:Windows 95/98/NT4/2000/internet'
Underneath it lists: 'The connection uses the following items', select 'Internet protocol (TCP/IP)'
There may be a black tick in a grey box 'Q0S Packet Scheduler' this cannot be un-ticked
Tab 'Advanced'/ 'Internet connection Firewall'
No changes need to be made
Click 'OK' and you will return to the desktop
To connect to CompuServe once you have a Dial-Up Connection:
Click 'Dial'
As the connection dials, a Terminal window will appear (Black), it will give you lines of text (Host name, User ID and Password)
It is important to let this run
The Terminal will close once the PPP-connection has been established
NB. Once CompuServe is closed, you will still have a live connection.
Double-click your dial-up shortcut or go to the bottom right-hand corner of the screen next to the clock and right-click on the small 'PC'-Icon. It will display 'Status' or 'Disconnect', select 'Disconnect' to terminate the connection

Select 'Connect to the Internet'

Select 'Set up my connection Manually'

Select 'Connect using a dial up modem'

Enter the appropriate name

Enter '0845 0801000' or '0845 079 5020'

User name must be the ID number

Add a shortcut and click 'Finish'

A connect-screen will open, click 'Properties' at the bottom


Choose 'Advanced (custom settings)' and click 'Settings'

Only 'PAP' and 'CHAP' should be selected, when you click 'OK', a small window will open, click 'Yes'

Tick 'show terminal window' and 'run script' click on 'Browse' and double- click on '\..\CIS.SCP'

Server type should be 'PPP' and 'TCP/IP' should be the only Protocol selected.
Note: QoS Packet Scheduler cannot be de-selected.

The last tab is 'Advanced' We do not need to make any changes here. The screenshot is here for your reference.
