Email Tips

Stop receiving unsolicited email
Email can help you get in touch with long lost friends, keep in touch with business contacts, and make friends all over the world. But as the Internet world grows, so do the problems of "spam" email--unsolicited, unwelcome email. With the Mail Controls feature under Parental Controls, you can control the email you and your children receive. You can also block specific screen names or Internet addresses, block the exchange of attached files or pictures in email, and more.

Create and read mail offline
There is no need watch the clock when collecting and replying to email. Instead, go "offline" to read and create your messages. Simply select Get All to pop your incoming mail into your In-Basket, and create and store all your outgoing mail in your Out-Basket until you are ready to Send All.

Addressing email to fellow CompuServe recipients
If you are sending an email to other members using CompuServe Classic Mail, you can use an abbreviated form of address, as follows:
CompuServe Member ID: 123456,7890
CompuServe Personal Alias: mary_smith

Addressing email for non-CompuServe recipients
Here are a few of the most common address formats for other email users.
Internet = INTERNET:name@organisation.domain
AOL = INTERNET:address@aol.com

Specify a message is urgent or confirm receipt
If your message is important, and you need to be sure that it has been retrieved, click Options when creating an email message. Here you can choose to:
-- indicate a message is urgent
-- be notified when the message has been received
-- show the recipient list - or not
-- set a release (delayed send) date*
-- set an expiration date*
* Can be set up to 90 days in advance.

Send your email to a group of people
To send an email to more than one person, click Recipients when creating the message. You can then either add people one-by-one using Add To List, or type in the name of a group you have set up in advance. To do so, simply select Address Book from the Mail menu, click on Add Entry, then Group Mailing List, click OK and follow the instructions Online.

Enhance your message with emoticons
Emoticons--abbreviations used Online to convey emotion--ensure the recipient correctly interprets the meaning, wit and charm of your email message. Here are a few of the most common emoticons:
Smile : -) Grin Big Grin
Wink ; -) Very Big Grin
Sad : -( Hug {{{{{ }}}}}
Surprise : -o
Smile (person wearing specs) 8- )

Use abbreviations to save typing
In a hurry? Use an abbreviation to take the hassle out of typing common phrases:
BTW - by the way
IMHO - in my humble opinion
FYI - for your information
TIA - thanks in advance
LOL - laugh out loud
ROFL - roll on floor laughing

Use email instead of a courier for urgent files
Got an urgent report, text, logo or presentation than needs to be somewhere else ASAP? Before you put it on a floppy disk and call a bike, check if your intended destination uses email--you could save yourself Pounds! Just click Attach when creating an email message.

Email a photo to your friends and family
If you have great snapshots you'd like to share with family and friends overseas, why wait for snail mail? You can now send images created with a scanner or a digital camera as attachments via email. Click Attach when creating your email message, and specify GIF, JPEG or BINARY format as required.

Create an email Address Book
The Address Book allows you to store and maintain your friends' and colleagues' email addresses, so you don't have to type them in from scratch every time you want to send an email. The list can be ordered by Name, the Address Type or by the address itself, and it pops up automatically when you click Recipients when creating an email.

Know your email address
If you receive email from the Internet, your address would be in one of the following formats: 123456.7890@compuserve.com (the comma in your Member ID becomes a full stop), or mary_smith@compuserve.com.

Include the original message in your reply
When you receive a lot of email, it is handy to know exactly what the sender is referring to in a reply. To include the original message, click anywhere in the body text of the email, choose Select All from the Edit menu and click Reply.

Attach several files to a single email
CompuServe gives you the ability to send multiple files to CompuServe and Internet recipients in one email transaction, provided the combined size of the files is not greater than 10MB. Just click on Attach when creating an email to select and add your files. CompuServe Members can also receive multiple files automatically.
