How to Install and Uninstall AOL Toolbar 5.0

You will receive the message "You must have administrator rights for this computer in order to make these changes," if you attempt to upgrade the AOL Toolbar software using a non-administrative account with Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista™. To resolve this error message, log in using the Administrator user name and password, then attempt to upgrade the AOL Toolbar software again.

Note: If you do not know the password for the Administrator account, contact either the computer administrator or the computer manufacturer for further assistance.

You may wish to print or save a copy of these instructions, as this page may not remain visible as you go through the suggested steps.

Log in as Windows Administrator, Then Upgrade

You must have administrator access on the computer to upgrade the AOL Toolbar software.

To log in as Windows Vista™ administrator, then upgrade:
1. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock the computer (requires password to unlock), then click Log Off.
2. Click the Administrator icon.
3. In the Password box, type the Windows administrator password, then tap the Enter key on your keyboard.
4. Launch Internet Explorer.
5. On the right side of AOL Toolbar, click the Toolbar Options icon, select Help, then click Update Toolbar....
6. Click the Yes button.
7. If a new update is available, follow the onscreen prompts to download and install it.

To log in as Windows XP administrator, then upgrade:
1. Click the Start button, click Log Off, then click the Log Off button.
2. Click the Administrator icon.
3. In the Type your password box, type the Windows administrator password, then tap the Enter key on your keyboard.
4. Launch Internet Explorer.
5. On the AOL Toolbar, to the left of the search box with the magnifying glass, click the small black down arrow, select Help, then click Update Toolbar....
6. Click the Yes button.
7. If a new update is available, follow the onscreen prompts to download and install it.
