Registering for AIM

To use AIM for the Nokia 3650 and Nokia 7650 phones you must have a registered AIM screen name. The screen name you use for the desktop computer or Internet versions of AIM can also be used with AIM. If you have not used AIM before, you can register a screen name at www.aol.co.uk/aim

Connecting to AIM

To connect to AIM, follow these steps:

  1. Connect to the Internet Turn on your Nokia 3650 and Nokia 7650 phones, and select AIM from the main application’s menu. The Welcome to AIM screen displays.
  2. Welcome to AIM Options
    The Welcome to AIM Options menu provides a doorway to the application.

Signing on

You must sign on to AIM to see and manage your Mobile Buddy List, as well as send and receive messages. The Mobile Buddy List is a subset of AIM’s desktop computer Buddy List. Mobile buddies can be added and removed using your mobile. Logging in to AIM on one device automatically logs you off from any AIM session on another device.

Sign on for New Users

  1. Select AIM from the smartphone’ s Main Applications Menu, and choose to open the application. The Welcome to AIM screen displays.
  2. You are asked if you have an AIM screen name Select Yes to proceed. You are prompted to enter your AIM screen name in the Enter screen name field.
  3. Enter your screen name and select OK. The Enter Password screen displays. Options are available for Remember Password, and Auto Sign on.
  4. Enter your password. If you want AIM to remember your password for future sign on, toggle Remember Password to ‘Yes’. If you want future sign on to proceed automatically, toggle Auto Sign on to Yes. When Auto Sign on is active, selecting AIM launches AIM and directly accesses the Mobile Buddy List.
  5. When done, select Sign on. The service provider’s Terms of Service display.
  6. Select ‘I Agree’ to accept the Terms of Service. AIM’s user Terms and Conditions display.
  7. Select ‘I Agree’ to accept AIM’s user Terms and Conditions. AIM opens and your Mobile Buddy List displays. AIM automatically builds the Mobile Buddy List by assigning to it up to 30 of the buddies on your desktop computer Buddy List. The screen names assigned also appear on the desktop computer Buddy List in a new, Mobile Device Group.

Sign on for Veteran Users

After you have already successfully logged into AIM on your Nokia, subsequent sign on proceed as follows:

  1. Select AIM from the Nokia’ s Main Applications Menu, and choose to open AIM. If you have enabled Auto Sign on, AIM opens and your Mobile Buddy List displays. Otherwise, continue with the steps below.
  2. Select Sign on from the Welcome to AIM screen Options. If you have signed on to the smartphone with difference screen names, you can select a screen name for sign on by choosing Select screen name from the Options.
  3. If Remember password is disabled, you need to enter the screen name’s password to complete sign on.


Managing the Mobile Buddy List

The Mobile Buddy List displays the name and status for all online and offline buddies.

Indications of buddies coming online are provided by their screen names flashing in the Mobile Buddy List title bar and a distinctive sound (where enabled). In addition, alerts can be set to receive an SMS notification when a buddy goes online. The Mobile Buddy List is automatically created when you first sign on. You can store up to 30 of the buddies from your AIM desktop computer Buddy List. You can manage your Mobile Buddy List by adding or deleting buddies. If the Mobile Buddy List is full, you need to delete old buddies before you can add any new buddies.

Adding Buddies

To add a new buddy, follow these steps:

  1. Select Buddy List Setup from the Options menu, and then select Add. AIM prompts you to Enter screen name in the field provided.
  2. Enter the buddy’s screen name and select OK to proceed. The new buddy is initially added at the end of the Offline section of the Mobile Buddy List.
    Note: The AIM service ignores spaces in screen names. Therefore, when you are typing a screen name that is a compound word, such as “SpaceCadet” or “iscreamdog” using T9 Text Input, just press the RIGHT ARROW to insert a space between the words instead of compounding the word. The screen name will display as “Space Cadet” or “I scream dog.” The AIM service will ignore the spaces and interpret the screen name correctly


Deleting Buddies

To remove a contact from the Mobile Buddy List, follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the buddy’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List.
  2. Select Buddy List Setup from the Options menu, and then select Delete. AIM requests confirmation of your request.
  3. Select Yes to confirm the deletion. The removed buddy no longer appears on the Mobile Buddy List. If you try to remove a buddy during an open conversation, you may be required to end the conversation before proceeding with the removal request.

Getting Buddy Information

From the Mobile Buddy List you can view the information for any one of the mobile buddies. Follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the buddy’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List.
  2. Select Get buddy info from the Options menu. The buddy’s screen name and Availability display.
  3. Select Back to return to the Buddy List.

Setting an Alert

If you want to make sure you know as soon as a certain buddy comes online, you can set an Alert. AIM sends you a message when this buddy comes online. If you are in the middle of a conversation, the alert displays in the Conversation screen. If you are in the Mobile Buddy List, selecting the buddy and choosing View from the Options displays the alert message. To set an Alert, follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the buddy’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List.
  2. Select Set alert from the Buddy List Setup menu. The buddy is marked with a bell icon. As soon as this buddy goes online, you receive a message letting you know the buddy is now online.
  3. To cancel the alert, go to the Buddy List Setup menu and select Clear Alert.

Activating Away Message

If you want to stay online but not be disturbed by instant messages for a certain period, you can set AIM to Away Message status. This indicates to all your buddies that you might not respond to messages they send. To set Away Message status, follow these steps:

  1. Select Options.
  2. Select Away Message.
  3. Select On to activate the Away Message feature.
  4. To cancel Away Message, select off.

Sending and Receiving Messages

You can send AIM instant messages to online buddies on your Mobile Buddy List. You may also include Smileys, and Quick message texts. Smileys are colorful icons designed to indicate how you are feeling, for example, a smiling Smiley face suggests you are happy. Quick Messages offer a popular short cut, avoiding having to type some of the common online chat expressions such as “How are you?” and “I’ll be with you in a second.”

Sending Messages to Buddies from Your Mobile Buddy List

To send an instant message, follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the buddy’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List.
  2. Select Write from the Options menu. If there is a conversation history (including an alert sent when this buddy went online), select View to display the Conversation screen, followed by Write from the Options. The Enter Message field displays.
  3. Enter the message in the Enter Message field. To add a Smiley or Quick Message, select Smileys or/and My Quick Text from the Options menu. Choose the Smiley icon, or Quick Message text, and select OK to include it in the message. To erase the message and start again, select Clear.
  4. If you want to add new entries to the My Quick text list, or delete existing entries, select Edit Quick text from the Options.
  5. Select Add new message to add a new My Quick text entry. The Enter Message field displays and you can type in the new text. When done select OK. To delete texts, highlight the text and select Delete message.
  6. When your message is ready, select Send from the Options menu, and select OK to send it.


Sending Messages to Other Buddies

To send an instant message to buddies that are not yet included in your Mobile Buddy List, follow these steps:

  1. Select Send IM To.. from your Mobile Buddy List. You are requested to enter a screen name.
  2. Enter the buddy’s screen name, and select OK when done. An empty conversation screen displays with a field for entering a message. The buddy’s screen name appears at the top of this screen.
  3. Enter the message in the Enter Message field. To add a Smiley or Quick Message: Select Smiley icon or/and My Quick Text from the Options menu. Select OK to include the smiley or quick text in the message. You can also choose to edit Quick text. To erase the message and start again, select Clear.
  4. When done, select Send from the Options menu, and select OK to send the instant message, your message is displayed in the Conversation screen.


Incoming Messages

Incoming messages are indicated by:

  • An incoming instant message tone (if sounds are enabled)
  • The message sender’s screen name flashes on the title bar above the Mobile Buddy List
  • A letter icon appears next to the message sender’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List

To read the new message:

  1. Highlight the buddy’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List.
  2. Select View from the Options. The new message displays. The sender’s screen name appears above the Conversation screen.
  3. To reply, select Write from the Options, and type text in the Enter Message field. You can also include Smileys and Quick Messages in the reply, as explained in step 2 on page 12. When done, select Send from the Options menu and select OK to send your message.
  4. When the contact responds to your reply, the response displays underneath the reply message. Messages that you send are indicated by a red < symbol, and message you receive are indicated by a blue > symbol.

Blocking and Un-blocking Messages

AIM allows you to block messages from specific buddies. To block messages follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the buddy’s screen name in the Mobile Buddy List.
  2. Select Block IMs from the Buddy List setup popup menu. The blocked buddy is marked with a blocked icon. You will not receive any further messages from this buddy, and the buddy will appear in the offline section of the Mobile Buddy List. if you select Block IMs while a conversation is in progress, the conversation may be deleted and you return to the Mobile Buddy List with the next screen name highlighted.
  3. If you highlight the name of a mobile buddy whose messages are blocked, and select Options, an Unblock IMs option is available in the Buddy List setup popup menu. Select Unblock IMs to remove the block on messages from this buddy.

Leaving the Application

AIM provides several different options for leaving the application, and so you can choose the option that best suits your need.

  • Select Exit. You are asked if you wish to allow incoming messages to wake up AIM (Auto-Wakeup). Select ‘Yes’ to allow Auto-Wakeup, or No to disable this feature. You exit AIM to the smartphone’s Main Menu.
  • Select Sign Off. The Welcome to AIM screen displays. You can Sign on using the same screen name, or sign on using a different screen name by choosing Select screen name from the Options select Switch screen name. You are offered the choice of signing on using one of your saved screen names, or creating a new screen name. If you select to create a new screen name, you need to accept the service provider’s user terms and conditions, and AIM’s use terms and conditions the first time you sign on with this new screen name.


Customising the Application

Enabling AIM Sounds

To enable or disable the sounds played with specific messaging events such as instant message arrival, follow these steps:

  1. Select Preferences from the Options menu. The Preferences menu displays.
  2. Go to Enable AIM Sounds. Toggle the setting to ‘Yes’ if you want the sounds to play, or toggle the setting to ‘No’ for ‘No’ sounds.

Enabling Auto Sign on

To enable or disable Sign on without the need to type in your screen name or password, follow these steps:

  1. Select Preferences from the Options menu..
  2. Go to Auto Sign on. Toggle the setting to ‘Yes’ if you want Auto Sign on activated or toggle the setting to No for no Auto Sign on.
