Innovation in the Community Awards
Thirty community groups and charities across the UK have been chosen to receive an AOL Innovation in the Community Award of £2,000 plus a year's free subscription to AOL.
The awards scheme was set up by AOL UK and the charity Citizens Online to help communities make the most of the Internet.
The awards were open to any community group or registered charity in the UK requiring support for an existing or new online project that would have a positive impact on the local or wider community.
Community Service Volunteers (CSV)
AOL UK is the official online media partner for Make A Difference Day, the flagship campaign of Community Service Volunteers (CSV), a registered charity that creates opportunities for people to take an active part in the life of their community.
On Make a Difference Day, people all over the UK take action to change their communities for the better, with activities ranging from picking up litter in a local park to far more ambitious projects such as turning waste ground into a skate park. Last year, more than 63,000 people got involved in over 3,400 activities.
AOL UK will be raising awareness of this year's Make A Difference Day and encouraging its more than two million members to take the Make A Difference Day challenge.
Alliance for Digital Inclusion
AOL UK is one of the founding members of an industry body called the Alliance for Digital Inclusion (ADI).
AOL UK, BT group plc, Intel UK, Microsoft UK, T-Mobile, Cisco Systems UK and IBM UK have joined forces with the charity Citizens Online to encourage collaboration and partnerships between industry, Government and the voluntary sector to promote the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for social benefit.
The establishment of the Alliance is a recommendation of the Government's Digital Inclusion Panel as part of its "Enabling a Digitally United Kingdom" report. ADI is inviting other businesses to join and support its aim of providing targeted, scalable and sustainable solutions to the issue of digital inclusion.
